Engage with Malaysian social enterprises working on sustainability, poverty reduction, and community development aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this program, students will:
1. Understand how the UN SDGs are locally implemented through social entrepreneurship.
2. Gain first-hand experience with Malaysian startups and grassroots initiatives.
3. Develop insights into sustainable business models that tackle social and environmental issues.
4. Strengthen cross-cultural collaboration and problem-solving skills.
5. Create action plans for community-based entrepreneurship aligned with the SDGs.

Day 1
Arrival in Kuala Lumpur

- Group icebreaking & cultural briefing
Outcome: Students understand Malaysia development context and
program objectives.
Day 2
SDGs in Action: Poverty Reduction & Education
- Visit an education-focused social enterprise in Klang Valley
- Participate in mentoring/tutoring activity with underserved youth
- Dialogue session with local changemakers
Outcome: Students understand how education and equity support SDG 1
& 4.
Day 3
Sustainable Cities & Community Empowerment
- Explore urban community projects (e.g. low-income housing and local innovation labs)
- Interactive workshop: Design Thinking for Social Impact
Outcome: Learn how community development and sustainable urban
planning relate to SDG 11.
Day 4
Green Entrepreneurship & Climate Action
- Site visit to a sustainability-focused startup (e.g. upcycling, zero waste, or urban farming)
- Workshop: Measuring Impact in Green Business
Outcome: Understand how SDG 13 & 12 are tackled through business.
Day 5
Social Finance & Ethical Investment
- Guest speaker from Islamic social finance or microfinancing institution
- Case study: Funding models for SDG-aligned enterprises
Outcome: Learn alternative financing for impact ventures (SDG 8 & 9).
Day 6
Travel to Penang & Cultural Immersion
- Transfer to Penang
- City tour focusing on multicultural heritage & local enterprise
- Evening group reflection on urban vs rural social needs
Outcome: Compare community development across Malaysian regions.
Day 7
Creative Social Enterprises & Cultural Preservation
- Visit creative hubs (e.g. crafts, textiles, local food) preserving heritage and empowering women/youth
- Hands-on cultural activity (e.g. batik, storytelling, food-based enterprise)
Outcome: Experience how SDG 5 & 10 connect to culture.
Day 8
Impact Storytelling & Advocacy
- Workshop: How to tell your social impact story
- Project work: Begin developing student social enterprise prototypes
Outcome: Gain tools for advocacy and awareness building (SDG 17).
Day 9
Rural Visit & Eco-Enterprise Models
- Travel to a rural village or agro-eco-tourism site
- Learn about sustainable agriculture, permaculture, or forest conservation
Outcome: Understand SDG 15 (Life on Land) through local land-based
knowledge.
Day 10
Youth-Led Innovation & Future Solutions
- Dialogue with youth entrepreneurs and university incubator teams
- Activity: Pitch Your Idea mini-competition
Outcome: Foster youth-led innovation toward SDGs.
Day 11
Flight to Sabah (East Malaysia)
- Travel and settle in Sabah
- Intro to East Malaysian challenges and indigenous-led social innovation
Outcome: Learn about regional equity and indigenous development (SDG
16).
Day 12
Indigenous Rights, Livelihoods & Eco-Based Enterprise
- Visit indigenous community project or homestay
- Learn about eco-tourism, sustainable crafts, or forest protection
Outcome: Connect cultural identity to sustainability and economic
development.
Day 13
Final Project & Presentations
- Team project presentations: SDG Action Plan or Social Enterprise Pitch
- Feedback and group reflection
- Closing celebration with cultural exchange
Outcome: Apply insights to design actionable solutions.

Departure
- Check-out and airport transfer
